Small critters in the snow
During a winter hike through deep snow along a river’s edge, I found trails and of mice, ermine, and possibly shrews. A mystery was also solved.
Boyne Valley Provincial Park trip
On this trip we observed great tracks of grouse, short-tailed weasel, deer, and also trailed coyotes.
Tracks on a golf course in Winter

Opossum tracks in Winter
While searching for squirrel gait variations, I stumbled upon an unexpected trail. What first looked like a skunk turned out, on closer inspection, to be my first-ever encounter with opossum tracks in snow.
Squirrel gait variations
In this post, I show gait variations in Red and Gray squirrels, motivated by reports from other trackers of squirrels hopping rather than bounding. These observations raise more questions than answers.
New Year’s Day Trip
This post records some interesting observations of coyote, a bird nest, and junco tracks in the north end of Guelph. We also clarify what is meant when we say a bird ‘skips’.
